Looking for jobs in the film and TV industry can be very challenging if you don’t know where to look. I have found that Staff Me Up is one of the best places to find job opportunities in my area. Whether you’re a production assistant, camera operator or editor, a strong application can make all the difference in getting hired. But with hundreds of people applying for the same jobs, it can be hard to make your application stand out.

After about five years of using Staff Me Up, I have developed some key tips to improve your application and increase your chances of landing the gig:

1. Fill Out Your Staff Me Up Profile Completely

Before you even start applying, make sure your Staff Me Up profile is filled out entirely. This might sound obvious, but many people leave sections incomplete, and that will certainly hurt your chances.

Including a profile photo will help you stand out and give a face to the application. Just make sure the photo is professional and clear. Also, it is essential to list all your credits  (even if you don’t have many) and list all relevant experience, including student films or independent projects. Filling out all the sections and providing a full background of your skills and experience will allow the hiring professionals to see everything you have to offer.

2. Apply to Production Jobs Quickly

This is honestly the biggest help to your application. If you can be one of the first few to apply to a role, your application will stand out. Many production jobs on Staff Me Up get hundreds of applications, and hiring professionals will likely not go through every single one to find the best candidate. They are more likely to pull the first five or ten applications and go from there. By getting your application in fast, you can help ensure they will see it.

I keep my notifications on so I can apply as soon as a relevant job is posted. You can go into the app or website and set notifications for certain titles, ensuring you never miss a role you are qualified for. Being one of the first applicants can make a big difference, especially for entry-level jobs.

3. Write a Strong Cover Letter (Keep It Short!)

Most applicants don’t write a cover letter, which is a huge mistake. Even a short, well-written note can set you apart. I always like to pitch myself with a few short sentences and give a background of my experience and work ethic.

I also find it helpful to mention a little about your interests and personality as well. If the project I am applying for is on a topic I resonate with, I share that passion in the cover letter to show that the role is something I’d be excited to work on. It may be tempting to use the same cover letter for multiple applications, but tailoring them to each job opportunity shows more professionalism and passion. Keep the letter simple and to the point, and you will make a strong first impression.

4. Promote Your Application Whenever Possible

All Premium members of Staff Me Up have the Promote feature, which allows you to promote your application when applying. This great feature helps to boost you to the top of the list, and helps the chances of the hiring manager seeing your application. This feature is available when you are subscribed to Premium. You get 2 tokens every month and it rolls over if you do not use it. I find that it really does increase the chances of getting a call for the job.

5. Have a Good Resume

Building a film resume that stands out can be taxing, but taking the time to make it perfect will benefit you in the long run. Keeping the resume on your Staff Me Up profile updated is also important because if you want people to check out your page, you want all your relevant experience listed. After every job is completed, re-upload a new version of your resume so you never fall behind.

If you are struggling to build a resume that works, reach out to connections in the industry and look at their resume as a sort of template. There are also countless resources that can help build a successful film resume.

Getting hired through Staff Me Up takes more than just submitting applications—you need a strong profile, a smart approach and a bit of strategy. By completing your profile, applying quickly, writing a compelling message and following these steps, you’ll significantly increase your chances of landing gigs.

I always tell my people to keep applying and don’t get discouraged. Because even if you don’t get that job there is always the next one, and you never know what may be waiting out there for you. The more you apply, the more you’ll learn, and the more doors you’ll open in the industry.
