From box office successes to significant industry changes, film festival lineups and exciting upcoming projects–July saw a lot of industry news.

1. Box Office Successes

Inside Out 2 has surpassed Minions, becoming the fifth highest-grossing animated film, while Deadpool & Wolverine set a record with a $211 million opening weekend. [Variety] 

2. Paramount’s New Leadership

David Ellison is set to become Chairman-CEO and Jeff Shell as President of Paramount, with Shari Redstone selling her family’s empire to Skydance Media in an $8 billion deal. [Variety]

3. Passing of Jon Landau

Jon Landau, the Oscar-winning producer behind Titanic and Avatar, passed away at the age of 63. [Variety]

4. Disney Data Leak Investigation

Disney is investigating a data leak after hackers allegedly posted internal communications online, raising concerns about security. [Variety]

5. Twisters Box Office

The disaster film Twisters is projected to make a strong debut, with expectations of a $55 million opening weekend. [Variety]

6. 2024 Emmy Nominations

The Bear leads the Emmy nominations with 23 nods, closely followed by Shogun. Robert Downey Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph have received their first Emmy nominations. [Variety]

9. Russo Brothers in Talks

The Russo Brothers are in negotiations to direct the next two Avengers movies, promising to bring their unique vision to the MCU. [Variety]

10. Dexter Sequel Announcement

Michael C. Hall is returning to the Dexter series, with a new sequel and a prequel series titled Original Sin. [Variety]

11. Longlegs Breaks Records

The indie horror Longlegs has grossed $58 million, surpassing Talk to Me as A24’s highest-grossing horror film in North America. [Variety]

12. Sundance 2027 Location Possibilities
