Posted on: Sep 12, 2024
Biopics have always captivated audiences by bringing the lives of iconic figures to the big screen, offering a glimpse into their personal struggles, triumphs and the impact they’ve had on the world. From music legends to influential writers and controversial political figures, several high-profile biopics are currently in production, generating significant buzz. Here are the top 5 most exciting biopics to keep an eye on:
Britney Spears
This film is just recently in development with Wicked director Jon Chu attached to direct. The film will reportedly follow Britney’s life as chronicled in her recent memoir The Woman in Me. With the #FreeBritney movement still fresh in the public’s mind, this film is poised to be both a powerful exploration of celebrity culture and a poignant portrayal of personal resilience. Not much is known yet about the cast or exactly what the story will be, but fans of the iconic pop star are on the edge of their seats waiting to find out more.
The Beatles
I have included this as one entry, but actually, there will be four films, each following a different Beatle from their point of view. Sam Mendes, director of American Beauty, 1917, and James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre, is set to direct each of the four films. While these films are still in the early stages of development, it is very exciting to see that these four rock legends will finally get the biopics they deserve.
The rumored cast is filled with talent. Paul Mescal will reportedly play Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson will reportedly play the late John Lennon and Saltburn star Barry Keoghan will reportedly play Ringo Starr. Charlie Rowe was rumored to be playing the late George Harrison, but his reps confirmed that the news wasn’t true. So, the accuracy of the rest of the casting rumors remains, for now, up in the air. Regardless of who plays these music legends, this will no doubt be the movie event of the year when all four films eventually release.
Michael Jackson
One of the most exciting biopics recently announced is the Michael film, set to be released next year. Michael Jackson is one of the most iconic musicians ever to exist, and he remains one of the most complex and controversial figures in music history. This biopic seeks to portray the King of Pop’s life from his childhood with The Jackson 5 to his unprecedented solo career and the controversies that surrounded him.
Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) is directing the project with Michael’s own nephew Jaafar Jackson, set to star in the role of his uncle. The movie is currently in production, with Lionsgate and Universal Pictures International slated to release it on April 18, 2025. Included in the film are Jackson family members, plus major players in Michael’s career like Berry Gordy, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones and more.
Bruce Springsteen
Jeremy Allen White is set to star as Springsteen in 20th Century and Disney’s upcoming biopic Deliver Me From Nowhere. News of the movie’s production picked up earlier this spring, and the star of The Bear is now deep in preparation for the legendary role.
The movie will depict the making of Nebraska, the stripped-down 1982 album that marked a new artistic direction for the Boss. Springsteen recorded Nebraska on a four-track cassette in his New Jersey bedroom a few years before he and the E Street Band would release the landmark Born in the U.S.A. With Springsteen’s blessing, White is in full research mode and has reportedly been heavily preparing for this role.
Anthony Bourdain
Anthony Bourdain, the celebrated chef and television host, became a media sensation with his unique blend of culinary exploration and cultural commentary, and he will be getting his own biopic from the brilliant minds of Star Thrower Entertainment and A24. Currently, it seems that Dominic Sessa (The Holdovers) is set to take on the role of the late chef in the upcoming biopic titled Tony. The film is still in early development, but the story will likely follow his immense impact on the world of food and culture.
As these projects continue to develop, they are sure to generate significant anticipation and discussion, cementing their place as must-see events in the cinematic landscape. For fans and cinephiles alike, these films are more than just movies—they are windows into the lives of those who have left an indelible mark on the world. These are just a few of the numerous biopics currently in the works, and it will undoubtedly be interesting to see which ones live up to the anticipation and leave a mark on cinema history.
