5 Anticipated Comedies of 2024
Posted on: Apr 09, 2024
One thing I look forward to every year is the new batch of comedy movies being released. True comedies seem to be a dying art form, so when looking at the movies released each year, I try to find films that are not afraid to lean all into comedy and give audiences something we so desperately need—laughter.
2024 promises to deliver a slate of comedies that are eagerly anticipated by audiences around the globe. From hilarious ensemble casts to cleverly crafted scripts, this year’s lineup boasts an array of films poised to bring laughter to anyone who watches. Whether it’s the return of beloved characters or the emergence of fresh voices in the genre, anticipation runs high for these upcoming releases. As we navigate through the uncertainties of life, the promise of laughter and infectious humor serves as a beacon of joy and entertainment. Here are five of this years comedies that look to be a riot at the box office.
The Fall Guy (May 3, 2024)
Hot off his hilarious role as Ken in the Barbie movie, Ryan Gosling aims to continue his blonde-headed comedic streak as stuntman Colt Seavers in The Fall Guy. The film follows him as he comes out of retirement to help his ex-girlfriend, director Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), when the star of the movie that she is working on goes missing. Colt is recruited to help find and bring him back. The movie will no doubt be action-packed, and with a cast like this, it is sure to provide plenty of laughs throughout.
IF (May 17, 2024)
John Krasinski has made a name for himself as a great writer and director in the horror genre. With IF, he plans to dominate the world of family comedies as well. This film will follow the story of a young girl who experiences a traumatic event and then begins to see abandoned imaginary friends. The star-studded cast has some of the biggest names in comedy today with Emily Blunt, Ryan Reynolds, Steve Carell, Matt Damon, Vince Vaughn, Awkwafina, Maya Rudolph and many more. The fantastical concept has set this project up to be a highlight for 2024 when it releases in theaters in May.
Inside Out 2 (June 14, 2024)
In the sequel to Disney Pixar’s Inside Out (2015), audiences will return to Riley’s innermost thoughts during her teenage years. Audiences can look forward to a large group of new feelings who will occupy some of the space in Riley’s head leading to more emotional and wildly funny antics. The original cast, led by Amy Poehler’s Joy, will return and be joined by new emotions like Anxiety, voiced by Maya Hawke. The original film expertly mixed deep emotional moments with equally deep laughs, and this new installment will likely bring the same enjoyment to anyone who watches.
Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26, 2024)
Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most anticipated movies of 2024, bringing Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool back to the big screen alongside fan-favorite character Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman. Both characters are set to make their official MCU debut, causing much excitement for Marvel fans. Audiences have been given very little about the plot, but rumors continue to swirl about more celebrity guests appearing in the film and how the movie will explain the transition from the Fox universe to the main MCU. This film promises to be action-packed, stuffed with comedy and many fans are already hailing it as the best MCU movie to be released since Spiderman: No Way Home.
Borderlands (August 9, 2024)
Borderlands is the newest entry in movies based on a popular video game series. Video game movies have a history of not being well received by audiences, but with the recent successes of Uncharted and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, this film has the chance to join their ranks and be a box office success. With director Eli Roth and stars like Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and more joining the cast, it certainly has raw talent. I personally have not played the video game, but the first look photos of this film have me excited for an action-packed comedy that is sure to satisfy fans and newbies of the source material alike.
In a world that often feels heavy, these films serve as reminders of the power of humor to unite, uplift and heal. As 2024 progresses, the anticipation for the release of some of this year’s best comedic films grows, leading to what is sure to be a successful season at the movies.
