6 Highly Anticipated Horror Films of 2024
Posted on: Apr 30, 2024
As a horror movie fanatic, each year I get excited at the prospect of watching what new horror movies will be released, and 2024 is already shaping up to be an amazing year for horror fans with an exceptional number of new and frightening stories. What makes this year extra exciting, however, is the large number of sequels being released, all primed to expand on many loved franchises in the horror genre. While fresh and original movies always pique my interest, there’s something uniquely thrilling about the continuation and expansion of beloved franchises. This year, the landscape of horror cinema is brimming with sequels that promise to reignite our fascination with iconic monsters and twisted narratives.
The Strangers: Chapter 1 (May 17, 2024)
The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the third film in the franchise, and bears striking similarities to the 2008 original. This film is less of a sequel and more of a prequel, and promises to broaden the backstory and offer more information about the mysterious strangers. The Strangers: Chapter 1 is the first in a new trilogy whose collective time range spans only a few days, and reportedly will tap into the history of the original.
A Quiet Place: Day One (June 28, 2024)
The first A Quiet Place movie revolutionized the horror genre. Its lack of dialogue and unique sound design has led audiences to be terrified in a whole new way, and paved the way for John Krasinski to become one of the next great horror directors. Since that original film, fans of the franchise have been asking to see where it all began. A Quiet Place: Day One will surely deliver what the fans have been begging for. The story is set to follow an entirely new cast of characters as they navigate this new silent world and fight to survive against these terrifying creatures.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September 5, 2024)
The Beetlejuice sequel has been in development limbo for decades since the original, and fans of the beloved ghoul will finally get that sequel they deserve. Director Tim Burton is set to return and will undoubtedly bring his eccentric mix of horror and comedy back for this new addition. Audiences have not been without new content (the beloved original spawned a hit TV series and award-winning Broadway musical), but this sequel has been long overdue for decades. Not much is known about the plot, but with the return of Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder and the addition of Jenna Ortega, you know it is going to be great no matter what the story is.
Saw XI (September 27, 2024)
The Saw franchise is quite possibly one of the biggest horror franchises of the past decade. Most dedicated fans of the films have stuck by this cult classic, despite the disappointing performance of the last few installments. Last year’s Saw X saw a revitalization of the series and the return of prolific serial killer John Kramer. The film signaled a return to what made the series great in the first place, and gave us a compelling story, along with the over-the-top gore audiences love so much. Luckily, fans only have to wait a year for a new installment, as Saw XI is set to release this September. Not a whole lot is known about the story, but it is sure to be a thrill no matter what happens.
Smile 2 (October 18, 2024)
Smile was a smash hit and an immediate classic when it was released last year. The announcement of a sequel has caught the attention of many fans, as this film is sure to build upon the chilling premise of its predecessor. Not much is known yet about the plot, but this sequel promises to delve even deeper into the twisted world of Smile, and solidify this franchise as the next big thing in horror.
Terrifier 3 (October 25, 2024)
After the smash success of Terrifier 2, this indie horror franchise became an instant classic. This franchise features the terrifying Art the Clown unleashing a night of terror and pushes the boundaries of the type of sadistic violence allowed in cinemas. Fans are excited for this new installment as it promises a whole new world of insane violence and horrifying frights, all set during Christmas time. This third installment in the trilogy is set to break new records in horror and I, for one, can’t wait.
These sequels stand out as particularly anticipated by fans eagerly awaiting their favorite horror characters to return to the screen. These are the films that have captured our imaginations and left us clamoring for more, and as the release dates draw nearer, excitement will begin to build, causing wild speculation as to how these will live up to the originals.
